South America

Ecuador & Galapagos holidays

ECUADOR & GALAPAGOS? EASY.

In the northwest corner of South America, sandwiched between Colombia and Peru, Ecuador is dwarfed by its neighbours. But this relatively small country certainly packs a punch. On a holiday to Ecuador, you can discover steaming volcanoes, rich jungles and the soaring peaks of the Andes – and that’s just on the mainland. If you venture to the Galapagos Islands, you’ll also be able to see unspoiled landscapes and diverse wildlife, some of which can’t be found anywhere else on Earth.

Mainland Ecuador is a nature-lover’s dream, blessed with its own region of the Amazon Rainforest. You can go on a guided hike through this luscious area – which covers the eastern half of the country – in search of monkeys, tapirs and jaguars, plus a variety of exotic birds. Meanwhile, running down the centre of Ecuador like a spine, the ‘Avenue of Volcanoes’ offers great hiking opportunities. You can also unwind in bubbling thermal springs, or spend some time exploring the UNESCO-listed city of Cuenca.

For a change of scene, head to Ecuador’s capital, Quito. Made up of cobbled streets, sun-soaked plazas and ornate churches, this charming city wouldn’t look out of place in Europe. You can go inside the ancient Basilica, take a cable car up to Pichincha – a dormant volcano – and admire the intricate carvings and gold interior of La Compañia de Jesus. Make sure you also visit Mitad del Mundo. Marking the equator, this monument is a must-see during your Ecuador trip, as you can stand with one foot in the Northern Hemisphere, and one in the South.

The highlight of any Ecuador holiday, though, is found 600 miles offshore. Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, the Galapagos Islands are a natural haven for wildlife, home to many unique creatures. Indeed, this archipelago is so remarkable that it famously inspired Charles Darwin’s The Origin of Species. On a trip to the Galapagos Islands, you’ll see giant tortoises, frigate birds, blue-footed boobies, marine iguanas, sea lions, and much more. Plus, given their limited contact with humans, most animals here are completely nonchalant about visitors – so you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how curious and friendly the wildlife is. If you want to take a closer look at the islands’ underwater world, don a snorkel during your Galapagos holiday to swim among tropical fish, rays and turtles.

However you want to explore, our Ecuador and Galapagos holidays have got you covered. You could join like-minded travellers on an Ecuador tour, embark on a Galapagos cruise, or even extend your trip by visiting neighbouring Peru. Tempted? Speak to out Travel Specialists to find out more.

Galapagos Islands

Charles Darwin arrived on the islands and spent 19 days exploring and studying the fascinating flora and fauna. He later published his theory of evolution, which was inspired by his observations on the Galapagos Islands.

Since then, word has rapidly spread about the unique magic of these lush islands. In 1959, the Galapagos became Ecuador’s first national park and, in 1978, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Prefer to stay on the ground? Exploring the Old Town is a must. In the centre, you’ll find the Plaza Grande, a bustling hub of activity. And, if you wish, you can make time to climb the Basilica of the National Vow. Ascend its two large towers to the clock faces to see sweeping views of sprawling Quito below. You’ll notice that this gothic church isn’t complete but this is deliberate as, legend has it, the world will end once the Basilica is complete. No rush there, then!
