Guatemala holidays are perfect for adventurous travellers, nature-lovers and history enthusiasts
The Mayan heart of Central America, Guatemala is blessed with some of the region’s most fascinating cultural wonders. This place is famous for its age-old sites, crumbling temples and pretty cities – but Guatemala holidays also serve up soaring volcanoes and rich forests. Whether you’re drawn to the time-stamped landmarks or the picturesque landscapes, this varied country will never disappoint.
An ideal choice for travellers who want to venture off the beaten track, a trip to Guatemala allows you to discover some incredible with archeological sites. Indeed, Mayan heritage is a huge part of the country’s DNA, as more than half the population have Mayan ancestors. In the northern region of Petén, you can marvel at Tikal National Park. This lost city features five Mayan temples, whose timeworn steps rise up out of the surrounding jungle. Why not take a guided tour around Tikal and admire the impressive views over the forest? And, while you’re in Petén, make sure you explore the ancient ruins of Aguateca, El Mirador and Yaxha.
Further south, the colonial city of Antigua is a must-visit during any Guatemala holiday. With cobbled streets and canary-coloured buildings, this UNESCO-protected city is a photographer’s dream. Go on a walking tour to discover the former capital’s bright backstreets, where houses are painted in vibrant blues and fiery reds, and ornate archways curve over the pretty lanes. This pint-sized city is surrounded by volcanoes, too, so you can expect striking views in every direction.
Lake Atitlán is another highlight. Up in the Guatemalan Highlands, this jaw-dropping lake is encircled by cone-shaped volcanoes, coffee farms and authentic Mayan villages. Take a boat trip to stop off at various villages – where markets and artisan workshops are the order of the day – or stroll through fields of blooming wildflowers. Visit a coffee farm to learn about the bean-to-brew process, or hire bikes for the day and cycle around the bright blue lake. Or, if you’re really feeling energetic, why not go on a hike to the top of 3,000-metre Volcan San Pedro?
For a real cultural adventure, you could continue your Guatemala holiday in neighbouring Belize or Mexico. Or you could even spend some time wildlife-watching in beautiful Costa Rica. Whatever you have in mind, our Travel Specialists will help you tailor-make the perfect getaway.
