Mount Kilimanjaro Holidays

A BUCKET LIST-WORTHY BREAK

Offering an iconic blend of diverse terrain and breathtaking scenery, climbing Africa’s highest mountain and the tallest freestanding mountain in the world should be at the top of your bucket list. If you’re looking for a top-tier challenge and a physical and mental adventure, you’ve found it here. You’ll embark on an action-packed holiday with a world-famous difference when you visit Mount Kilimanjaro. It’s not only an impressive 5,895-metre landmark, but it’s also the perfect centrepiece for your next holiday in Tanzania.

This ancient volcano is located in the Kilimanjaro Region of Tanzania and is home to three impressive peaks - Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. It’s important to note that while Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, Kibo could erupt at any time - its last major eruption was 360,000 years ago!

Although incredibly exhilarating and very rewarding, many factors must be considered before trekking the mountain. And they’re not decisions that should be taken lightly. First, which route will you choose? As some have higher success rates than others. If you’re looking for a more scenic trek, the Lemosho Route boasts beautiful views, taking around eight days to complete, which is perfect if you think you’ll need more time to adjust to the altitude. Next, you’ll need to consider when you’ll visit and what time of the year the weather may be best to do so. Lastly, you must ensure you are prepared and have the right equipment for a safe and comfortable climb, which is vital.

The best thing about this legendary snow-capped volcano is that it’s climbable by people from all walks of life. Incredible views, an adrenaline-pumping experience and home to some of the most fascinating animals on earth - it’s no wonder a staggering 30,000 people choose to trek Mount Kilimanjaro every year.

There’s a range of routes and holidays to choose from when you book a trip to Mount Kilimanjaro with us. Simply get in touch online, give us a call, or visit one of our Travelbag Shops.

Choosing a route

There are seven routes to consider when trekking up Mount Kilimanjaro: The Northern Circuit Route, Lemosho Route, Shira Route, Machame Route, Rongai Route, Marangu Route and finally, the Umbwe Route. If you’re looking for a route with a high success rate, then your best bet is the Lemosho Route. It takes around seven to eight days to complete and is renowned for its easier summit and excellent acclimatisation. Reaching the top is often the overall goal for visitors to Mount Kilimanjaro, so understandably, this is a popular choice.

Prefer a more tranquil journey? Then opt for the quietest trek - the Rongai Route, which is much less crowded and leaves you at one with your impeccable natural surroundings. Although it’s incredibly peaceful, it’s important to mention the success rate with this route is much lower.

How about the most challenging route of all? For an unforgettable adventure and a unique wilderness experience, the Umbwe Route is the one for you. It’s short, steep and the hardest. It’s not ideal for most trekkers and should only be attempted by those with climbing experience.

Best time to go

The best time of year to visit Mount Kilimanjaro depends on the weather and popularity. The warmest times of the year are between December and March or June until the end of October. These months are ideal because the weather is dry and perfect for mountain climbing. However, it’s important to remember that this is also the busiest time of year.

To break it down month by month - January and February are recommended as they offer clear skies and plenty of sunshine - especially in the mornings. Due to the high rain, mud and possibility of snow, April and May are less popular. June offers dryer conditions than the last three months; however, the temperatures are slightly cooler, and the clouds often obscure the views. July, August, September and October are usually dry, with minimal rain, clear sunshine, and fantastic views. And the rest of the year usually consists of afternoon rains, which often means slippery ground, not ideal for trekking up a mountain.
